You don’t have to boil the life out of an egg – with this method you bring the egg to the boil in a saucepan using cold water, then leave it for the desired length of time to continue cooking off the heat until you get the egg you like. Here’s a timetable for all sizes of eggs to achieve a soft-boiled, medium-boiled or hard-boiled egg.

How to Make a Boiled Egg

Method:
Place the eggs in a single layer in a saucepan. Cover with cold water, place the lid on the saucepan and bring the water to the boil. When the water boils remove the saucepan from the heat.

Medium-Sized Eggs
For a soft-boiled egg, leave the eggs in the saucepan for 2 minutes before removing.
For a medium-boiled egg, leave the eggs in the saucepan for 3 minutes before removing.
For a hard-boiled egg, leave the eggs in the water for 8 minutes.

Large Eggs
For a soft-boiled egg, leave the eggs in the saucepan for 3 minutes before removing.
For a medium-boiled egg, leave the eggs in the saucepan for 6 minutes before removing.
For a hard-boiled egg, leave the eggs in the water for 13 minutes.

Extra-Large Eggs
For a soft-boiled egg, leave the eggs in the saucepan for 5 minutes before removing.
For a medium-boiled egg, leave the eggs in the saucepan for 8 minutes before removing.
For a hard-boiled egg, leave the eggs in the water for 15 minutes.

How to Clean up Egg Spills
Sprinkle the spill with salt, the salt will absorb the liquid and make it easier to wipe clean with a paper towel. Make sure to clean the surface afterwards.

How to Remove Egg Shell
When you crack an egg and find that you have left some egg shell in the dish, use the empty egg shell to scoop out the shell.

Where to Store Eggs
If you buy eggs from the chilled section at the supermarket or store then you should keep them in the fridge when you get home. If the eggs are stored in the aisle (and have not been chilled) you can leave them in or out of the fridge.

When to Use Eggs
Always use eggs by the end date printed on the egg and discard any that are cracked (even if you can barely see the crack).
